UH's Murray tops in discus

University of Hawai'i's Novelle Murray won the discus throw at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships yesterday at El Paso, Texas.

Murray threw 156 feet, 1 inch.

Hawai'i finished last out of nine teams with 14 points. Rice won with 172.83 points.

NOTES: Hawai'i's 4x400 meter relay team, consisting of Carolyn Berger, Hanna Bremler, Kira Lee and Amanda Page, finished eighth, in 4 minutes, 0.83 seconds.



FITNESS

• Lana'i girls win: The Lana'i High School girls won the Youth Physical Fitness Competition this past weekend at Camp Pendleton, San Diego. Lana'i was second in the boys' division.

Participants are scored in five events: pull ups, push ups, sit ups, distance in the standing broad jump and a 200-yard shuttle run.

Girls members are: Colby Gelakowski, Michelle Divina, Stephanie Richardson, Danica Lute, Cindel Jacintho, Mallory Bagoyo, Erica Dombrigues, Misha Sarme and Michelle Del Rosario. Boys members are: Michael Fialkiewicz, Darryl Divina, Kris Lopez, Rolando Agtarap, Blaine Kaaikala, Alnor Cabonce, Jan Caceres, Marlon Cabico and Howard Badillo. Coach: Curtis Kamelamela.



MEETINGS

• QB Club guests: Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona will speak on "Sports and Politics" at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Restaurant.

The club's luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. and meeting at noon.

Aiona is also an assistant basketball coach at Saint Louis School. Other guests are Mufi Hannemann, organizer of the 10th Women's Basketball Jamboree and Mel deLaura, University of Hawai'i strength and conditioning coach.
