Power knocked out in Makaha

About 5,000 Makaha residents were without power for most of the day yesterday because of two downed power lines, Hawaiian Electric Co. said. Electric crews repaired one line after a single-vehicle accident early in the morning. Police had no record of the accident.

As crews were repairing the line, a second power line went out at about 3 p.m. because of a failed connection between two wires, said Bruce Benson, electric company spokesman. Customers were affected on Wai'anae Valley Road to Jade Street along Farrington Highway, Benson said. Crews restored the power by 4:30 p.m.

Motorcyclist critically injured

A 27-year-old Honolulu man was critically injured yesterday in a motorcycle accident on H-1 Freeway's Waipahu off-ramp.

Police said the man lost control of his Suzuki motorcycle at the top of the off-ramp at about 1:40 p.m. He was thrown from the motorcycle and landed onto the roadway.

The man was in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet, and speed appears to be a factor, police said.
