Science fair awards given

The Conservation Council for Hawai'i issued awards in three categories at the recent Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair:

  • Junior Display category: Kamie Oda, Wai?kea Intermediate School, "Fire and Ice: Glacial Evidence on Mauna Kea," and Andrew Chung, Iolani School, "A Study of Box Jellyfish and Their Monthly Appearance on the Leeward Shore of O'ahu."
  • Junior Research category: Kimberly Fuentes and Frelen Gacillos, Wahiawa Middle School, "Estimating the Mass of Salvinia molesta in Lake Wilson," and Naohito Miura, Kaw?nanakoa Middle School, "Can Microorganisms be Used to Improve the Water Quality of Kawainui Marsh?"
  • Senior Research category: Andrea Kelekolio, Jerome Madlangbayan and Stephanie Nix, Waipahu High School, "Water Quality Effects on the Ae'o (native Hawaiian Stilt)," and Mhelanie Kay and Katrina Morgan, Waipahu High School, "Determining Available Invertebrate Food Supply for the Hawaiian Stilt at Pouhala Marsh."


Seniors' work recognized

George Lum, 80, 11-year member and president of Palolo Chinese Home, and Alice Morisako, 72, an active volunteer with the Moanalua Senior Citizen's Club, Moanalua Gardens Foundation and Kaiser Medical Center, were named the 2003 Outstanding Male and Female Volunteers at the recent 37th Annual Mayor's Senior Recognition Program at Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa.

Also honored with Akamai Living Awards were Lorraine Caceres, 79; Manuel Silva, 80; Pat Paakaula, 76; Pat Roth, 75; Doris Rewick, 81; and Beatrice Terumoto, 76. The annual recognition is produced by the Honolulu Committee on Aging and the city Elderly Affairs Division. Sponsors included the Hawaii Medical Service Association and Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa.


Catholic group honors service

Robert L.P. Tong received the Catholic Charities Hawaii Ulu Award at their annual meeting recently, recognizing years of service and commitment to the organization.

Partners in Mission awards were presented to Hilo's St. Joseph Church; St. Catherine Church, Kapa'a, Kaua'i; and the Hawaii Catholic Herald.

Also installed were members of the 2003 board of directors: chair, Brandt Farias; vice chair, Marianta Lopez; treasurer, I. Patrick Griggs; secretary, Roger Wall, and affiliate agency board presidents, Chris Dang, Jan Ohtani and Richard Stack.
