THE LEFT LANE
BayFest goes alt

Advertiser Staff

Alt hip-hop courtesy of, say, The Pharcyde probably would've given us some serious angina. But the just-announced concert lineup for this year's edition of BayFest at Marine Corps Base Hawaii still brought a touch of warmth to our alternative-leaning musical hearts. Scheduled for shows at the July 4th weekend fest are Everclear, pictured, (intelligently humorous alt-rock), Neal McCoy (alt-traditionalist honky tonk) and Joan Jett (alt-before-there-was-such-a-thing-rock). Dates, times and ticket prices will be announced later this week at www.bayfesthawaii.com.

Hawai'i's model teen

Kailua teen Alyson Thomas is one of eight national finalists in the 2003 Chanel New Model of the Year competition, Seventeen magazine has announced. She'll fly to New York on an all-expense-paid trip to participate in a fashion show for top modeling agents, star in a photo shoot for Seventeen and receive hair and beauty makeovers.

One grand prize winner will jet to Paris for a trip that includes tickets to the Chanel Ready-to-Wear fashion show. Thomas already has beaten some tough competition: The field has been narrowed from more than 15,000.

Having a cow, man

In a salute to American pop culture, Britain's Observer newspaper recently published "300 Reasons Why We Love The Simpsons." News to note: Homer Simpson was voted Britain's favorite TV character ever, beating out even Basil Fawlty of "Towers" fame.

On the list: Homer's Y-fronts (Reason 64); "D'oh" making it into the 2001 Oxford English Dictionary

(Reason 100); Marge's deepest secret: "My hair isn't really blue"

(Reason 146). To read more, go to www.observer.co.uk and enter The Simpsons under "Search this site."
