UH-Hilo signs JUCO point guard out of L.A.

Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i-Hilo men's basketball team recently announced the signing of its third recruit, Alex Cabagnot, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Los Angeles Valley College.

Cabagnot completed his LAVC career averaging more than 10 points and six assists per game. In 27 games, he committed only 37 turnovers. He twice received the "Iron Man Award" given to the player taking the most charges.

"He probably is the first real point guard that we've had since I've been here," UHH basketball coach Jeff Law said. "Scotty (Prather) wasn't a real point guard coming out of high school. He was an off-guard like Kimo (Keiter-Charles).

"Alex is more point guard oriented. Pass first, handle the ball, score second. I think Alex is going to make a lot of people better."

Cabagnot joins Steven McMaryien and Terrance Troupe on the Vulcans' list of recruits.

SOFTBALL

• UH players honored: University of Hawai'i softball players Stacey Porter and Trisha Ramos were selected to the NCAA Region 3 All-Tournament Team, voted on by media, NCAA representatives and tournament staff.

Porter, the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, batted .615 in five games with four doubles, four runs, and RBIs. She had a .923 slugging and .703 on-base percentages, and walked four times.

Ramos batted .125 with two RBIs, but one of them was the game-winning RBI against Northwestern in the 11th inning. She converted on 20 of 21 total chances on defense for a .952 fielding percentage.

Hawai'i lost to Southwest Texas State, 2-1, in the semifinals.

The region also consisted of Arizona State, LSU, Northwestern, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Tennessee Tech, and eventual winner Texas.
