The congressman said in a statement he wanted to get some guidance on how the United States should approach reconstruction and how long U.S. forces should remain in the country. He praised U.S. soldiers for their bravery and professionalism in winning the war.
U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie is going to Iraq.
"We want to get a firsthand look at the situation, talk to people on the ground and get a sense of where our policy should be headed," said Abercrombie, D-Hawai'i.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, will lead the House congressional delegation. Abercrombie is a member of the committee.
Other lawmakers have visited Iraq since the war ended, but the Department of Defense has limited such visits because of security risks.
Earlier this month, a Senate delegation that was to include Sen. Dan Inouye, D-Hawai'i, canceled a trip to Iraq and the Middle East.
