Motorcyclist dies after crash
HILO, Hawai'i A 60-year-old Puna man died early yesterday after his motorcycle was hit by a car on Volcano Highway just south of Ikaika Street in Hilo. Police said Pedro Pacheco of Pepe'ekeo was thrown from his Hilo-bound motorcycle when it was rear-ended by a 2002 Nissan Sentra around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday. A 2000 Toyota Corolla traveling in the same direction then struck Pacheco while he was on the ground. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center and pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. yesterday.
Peace ceremony at Kaua'i center
LAWA'I, Kaua'i Shakuhachi flute grand master Riley Lee will perform during a ceremony for world peace and compassion from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Lawa'i International Center's Buddhist shrine complex. Participants can walk a winding hillside path past 88 shrines that form a miniature replica of an ancient pilgrimage route at Shikoku, Japan. The shrines were erected a century ago by Japanese immigrants. The entrance to the shrine complex is off Kaumuali'i Highway just west of the Lawa'i Bridge. Carpooling is recommended. La'ie Elementary School was named the Hawai'i winner in the Oscar Mayer Talent Search School House Jam contest. Kraft Foods awarded the school $10,000 on May 16 during a ceremony in which the students performed the winning wiener jingle. La'ie was among nearly 1,200 elementary schools nationwide and nine in Hawai'i entered in this year's contest. La'ie's video entry included fire-knife dancing by fifth-grader Julius Tafiti. It also included an original Hawaiian chant and Polynesian drums and costumes.
Store materials to be auctioned
Equipment from the shuttered Strawberry Connection store will be on the auction block starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the store's former location in the Dole Cannery shopping complex in Iwilei. Inspection begins at 8 a.m., and items include freezers, display cases, coffee makers and microwaves. The store helped cultivate a taste for fresh and gourmet foods before closing last month.
Golf tournament set for July 14
Kapolei High School is taking applications for its third annual golf tournament to be held July 14 at Kapolei Golf Course. The tournament is a fund-raiser for the school's athletic program. Registration starts at 11 a.m., with a shot-gun start at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $125 per player, $375 per three-person team. You can sponsor a hole for $600, which includes fee for one team.
