Snorkeler, 54, latest fatality at Hanauma Bay

A 54-year-old man died yesterday afternoon after he was pulled unconscious from Hanauma Bay.

The man, identified only as a visitor from Oklahoma, was snorkeling in the area known as "Witches Brew" with his son when he was seen floating face-down and being bashed against the rocks at about 11:30 a.m. He was brought out of the water, and lifeguards performed CPR.

Ocean Safety Capt. Kendall Rust said lifeguards and ambulance personnel worked on the man for about an hour before he was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said.

Rust said the Witches Brew is the roughest part of the bay, but conditions yesterday were "nothing out of the ordinary."

An autopsy will be performed.
