Kimura captures Senior Amateur

Paul Kimura sank a birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win Hawai'i State Golf Association's Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship yesterday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Kimura and Wendell Kop finished at 3-over-par 147 after two rounds. Kimura shot a 1-under 71 and Kop a 73 yesterday.

Kimura sank his winning birdie on the par-4, second hole.

Gary Kong shot a 74 and finished third at 153, followed by Merv Matsumoto (77—154).

JUDO

Bronze for Takata: Taylor Takata of Wahiawa won a bronze medal at 60kg (132.3 pounds) yesterday in Mexico City at the Pan American Zone 1 Championships, one of the qualifying events for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Takata is also entered in the Benito Juarez Championships today and tomorrow in Mexico City.

USA athletes won 5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals yesterday.

For a country to qualify a weight class for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, that weight class must be ranked in the top six for men or top three for women in Pan America at the cutoff date next spring.

BASEBALL

UH camps set: The University of Hawai'i is offering three summer baseball camps for players ages 8-18 at Les Murakami Stadium.

A day camp that covers all aspects of the game is June 23-27. Cost is $175 per camper.

A pitching and catching camp is June 28-29. Cost is $110.

A hitting camp is July 5-6. Cost is $110.

Each camp 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and limited to 200 campers. Campers must have their own workout clothes and equipment, such as gloves, bats and catching gear. Lunch is not provided.

Instruction will be provided by UH baseball coaches, as well as local high school and college coaches. Campers will be grouped by age and skill level.

GOLF

Na Koa tournament: Openings remain for the Na Koa Football Club's Big Island June 2 at the Hokuli'a.

There also will be a warm-up round on June 1 at the Mauna Kea Course, as well as a reception at the Hapuna Prince Hotel.

University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones is scheduled to attend the event. Proceeds go to Na Koa, the football team's booster club.

Entry fee for the tournament at Hokuli'a is $250 per person. The Mauna Kea warm-up is $100.
