Stories sought about O'ahu's 'Peanut Butter' minister

Advertiser Staff

There are a million stories in the big-city issue of homelessness, and Margot Schrire is looking to chronicle those of the Rev. Claude Du Teil, who started O'ahu's only emergency shelter for the homeless.

The Institute of Human Services is seeking people who remember the early days of Du Teil's "Peanut Butter Ministry" to share their memories, looking for those who helped as well as were helped by the dedicated Episcopal priest. Du Teil began his Peanut Butter Ministry with a case of peanut butter, grape jelly and a jar of Maxwell House coffee, "feeding Hawai'i's homeless and lifting them with his tough love," according to his obituary. (He died in 1997.)

Local filmmaker John Lutfey will be documenting the stories beginning June 2. If you know of or have a story to share, call Schrire at 845-7150, Ext. 209.
