ISLAND STYLE
Divider panels add warm colors, illusion of space

By Paula Rath
Advertiser Fashion Writer

Sometimes it's nice to have at least the illusion of space in our tiny island abodes. Now there's a way to divide space without actually taking any away.

Los Angeles-based textile designer Susan Unger's floating panels help divide rooms without taking away extra space. The panels are available at Fine Linens & Furnishings in Honolulu.

Textile designer Susan Unger, who is based in Los Angeles but inspired by Island themes and colors, creates floating panels in translucent organza that can be used to divide space or filter and soften light. The panels are 96 inches long and range in width from 17 inches to 50 inches, or they can be custom made to fit a given space. Prices range from $140 to about $350.

Unger's colors are rich and sensuous: Asian red, rain-forest green, earthy umber, burnished gold, burnt orange and Pele vermillion. She often layers the hand screen-printed organza with linen, velvet or other types of silk, such as dupioni.

Motifs include abstract and graphic designs, bamboo, ferns, fig leaves, hibiscus and other flowers.

The floating panels coordinate with bed linens, pillows, table mats, napkins and runners, and lamp shades.

Unger's work is available in Honolulu at Fine Linens & Furnishings, 614 Cooke St., Suite 201. For more information, phone: 589-2737.
