THE LEFT LANE
Stamp arrives Friday

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Oops! A wire-service story in this space last Friday gave the wrong date for release of the U.S. Postal Service's new Purple Heart stamp. It will be issued beginning this Friday.

(The post offices will be closed today, a federal holiday.)

Gen. George Washington created the Purple Heart to honor soldiers under his command.

As the oldest American military decoration, the Purple Heart now will be commemorated with a 37-cent U.S. stamp.

The medal is awarded to members of the military wounded or killed in action.

Makeup made easy

Now that Honolulu-based E'Jay Maldonado is creating makeup and skin care for Body & Soul, he is keeping the needs of Hawai'i women in mind. Among his latest innovations is Aqua-Liners, a line of eye pencils available in six soft shades, which come with a sponge-tip applicator attached.

For a light swath of color, use the pencil dry, blending with the sponge tip. To add drama or create an eyeliner effect, put a tiny drop of water on the sponge applicator and run it over the eyelid. The method offers a lot of control. And it won't creep on oily skin.

Colors include neutrals and soft pastels (lavender, baby blue, seafoam green). Aqua-Liners cost $20 and are available at Sephora in Ala Moana Center, and are to be offered on sephora.com and bodyandsoul.com.

'Frazz' wins award

Way to go, Frazz.

Jef Mallett's multitalented cartoon janitor won the Religion Communicators Council's 2003 Wilbur Award (comic/editorial cartoon division) for excellence in communicating values, ethics and religious themes in a secular media.

"Frazz," which recently joined The Advertiser's roster of daily comics, is about a sharp-witted elementary school janitor with a special gift for helping kids learn about the important things in life.
