Maryknoll writer receives award
Maryknoll School sixth-grader Edwin Torres has received top honors at the 2003 Nene Award Essay Contest, which celebrates the literary works of students in grades four through six.
The Nene Award is sponsored by the Hawai'i Library Association's Children and Youth Section and the Hawai'i Association of School Librarians.
Moanalua senior wins scholarship
Moanalua High School senior Jane Chung has been awarded a $4,000 Regional Coca-Cola Scholarship by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation to go toward her college education.
More than 104,000 students applied for the 250 scholarships nationwide, and winners were chosen on the basis of academic achievement, school and community leadership, and their desire to succeed.
Educators elect officers
The Hawai'i Business Education Association announced its officers for the 2003-04 year, including: Michael Fujita, president, from Leeward Community College; Evelyn Sugihara, president-elect, from Windward Community College-Employment Training Center; Normandeene Musick, vice president, from Halau Ku Mana; Jan Ikeda, secretary, from Radford High School; and Della Kunimune, treasurer, from Leeward Community College.
Playwrights honored
Kumu Kahua Theatre and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Theatre Department has announced the winners of their 2002 playwriting contest.
- Pacific/Rim Prize ($400): Rodney Hom of Monterey Park, Calif., "Orpheus Afloat."
- Hawai'i Prize ($500): Anthony M. Oliver of Kailua, "Theme Park."
Kapolei resident on dean's list
Tara E. Slattery of Kapolei was named to the dean's list at Northeastern University in Boston for the winter quarter of 2003. Slattery is majoring in journalism.
Achievers recognized
The 14th Annual Kapolei Outstanding Achievement (KOA) Award winners are:
- Community Service: Rotary Club of Kapolei
- Education: Kari Terjeson, special education teacher
- Entrepreneurship: Jeffrey J. Prostor, president Brookfield Homes Southland, Inc.
- Environment: Covanta-H-Power
- Lifetime Service, Mike Freitas, community volunteer.
The KOA awards program recognizes individuals, companies, and nonprofit groups that demonstrate commitment to the improvement of people, business, and the community in the Kapolei region, and were established by Campbell Estate in 1990.
