Former Warrior Ching recovering

Advertiser Staff

Former University of Hawai'i men's volleyball All-American Tony Ching, who was injured in a moped accident Friday, remained in the intensive care unit at The Queen's Medical Center yesterday.

Ching, who completed his NCAA eligibility last month, suffered injuries to his head, left lung and legs. A hospital statement yesterday said a tube that had been inserted into Ching's chest to treat a collapsed lung has been removed, and "head scans appear positive at this time."

According to a hospital physician, Ching was riding a moped "through a green light" at the intersection of Wilder Avenue and Alexander Street Friday afternoon when the accident involving an oncoming car occurred.

Ching was carrying a black Labrador/Akita puppy at the time of the accident and the family asks that anyone finding it call the hospital's public relations department at 547-4780.

SURFING

• Irons, Robb advance: Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb reached the third round of the Quiksilver Fiji Pro yesterday in 4- to 5-foot waves at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji.

Irons, who is currently ranked No. 1 on the World Championship Tour, was one of the standouts of the first round with a two-wave total of 17.6 (out of 20).

Robb was not far behind with a two-wave total of 16.33.

By winning first-round heats, Irons and Robb advanced directly to the third round.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore was eliminated in the second round by Australian Taj Burrow. Patacchia is not a world tour surfer, but qualified for the contest by placing second in the trials event.

Shane Dorian of the Big Island placed third in his first-round heat, and has yet to surf in the second round.
