THE LEFT LANE
Blame it on the tofu

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Tofu makes you stupid: truth or tabloid? Peter Fenton spent 15 years as a reporter for the National Enquirer, and knows the difference. He's put that sense into a game book called "Truth or Tabloid?" (Three Rivers Press, $12.95), with about 100 lists of five or six generally outrageous declarations that challenge the reader to decide whether each is "truth" or "tabloid."

Tofu makes you stupid? Truth! A 30-year longitudinal study by the Hawaii Center for Health Research, Fenton reports, draws just that conclusion.

Maui teen 'Switched!'

Miko Walczuk
Miko Walczuk, a 17-year-old from Maui, and Matthew Sereni of California changed places for an ABC Family network show, "Switched!" a half-hour program featuring teenagers from different parts of the country who trade identities. Sereni was schooled at home and took part in arts projects at Walczuk's house. Walczuk played basketball in Los Altos. The episode shows at 4:30 p.m. today.

Koa with pineapples

In a nod to Hawai'i's plantation era, Martin & MacArthur, furniture builders for more than 40 years, have added a pineapple motif to the hand-carved legs of their koa chests of drawers. Maile leaves curl around the legs. Craftsman Jon Martin always signs each piece of koa furniture he designs and builds.

The new design can be found at Martin & MacArthur' furniture showroom, 1815 Kahai St., Kalihi.
