Two Hawai'i youth volunteers get national recognition

Advertiser Staff

Two Hawai'i teens are among 100 youth volunteers nationwide recognized for the 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards this month.

Corey Johnson, 17, a student at Hilo High School, and Kelcie Suda, 13, a student at St. Anthony School in Wailuku, Maui, attended a ceremony May 4 and received an engraved silver medallion for their efforts.

Johnson founded an organization of more than 100 young people from 12 schools to work together to address juvenile delinquency and other youth issues.

Suda spent much of her summer vacation last year entertaining young homeless children at a local shelter by arranging art projects, showing movies and organizing activities.

The awards also include a $1,000 prize, a paid trip to Washington, D.C., and a chance to meet former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and actor David Gallagher of TV's "7th Heaven."

The Prudential awards were created eight years ago to encourage youth volunteers and to identify and reward young role models.

"Corey and Kelcie are extraordinary young people who exemplify the spirit of community that is so important to the future of our cities, towns and neighborhoods," said Arthur F. Ryan, chairman and chief executive officer of Prudential.

"By honoring them, we hope not only to give them the recognition they so richly deserve, but also to inspire others to follow their example."
