Big Island child drowns in tank

Big Island police are investigating the drowning of a toddler found Sunday in a catchment tank in the Kea'au subdivision of Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Fire officials responded to an alarm at 2:22 p.m. at 11th Avenue off Kaloli Street and found a neighbor performing CPR on the child. Officials said the mother found the boy floating face down in the tank.

Police identified the boy as Keoni Pagan, 2. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.


Bicyclist hit by car dies

A 48-year-old bicyclist who was struck Sunday while competing in the Keauhou-Kona Triathlon died yesterday of his injuries at The Queen's Medical Center, Big Island police said. The Honolulu medical examiner identified him as Wayne Scrimshaw of Kailua, Kona.

Police were called to a point north of the 84-mile marker of Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway at 9:27 a.m. Sunday.

Investigators determined that Scrimshaw was attempting to pass another cyclist when their handlebars collided, sending him into the path of a car.

Man assaulted by three teens

A 27-year-old man believed to be a tourist was in critical condition after being attacked by three teenagers on Kalakaua Avenue at about 10 p.m. Sunday, police said yesterday. Police said three people, ages 19, 18 and 16, were arrested in the attack.

According to police, witnesses said they saw the teens walk behind the victim, and one of them pushed him. Then all three assaulted the man. They fled, but witnesses saw them several minutes later in a fast food restaurant and called police.

The victim was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, police said.


Visitor drowns in hotel pool

A 59-year-old visitor from Japan drowned yesterday in the swimming pool of a Waikiki hotel, fire officials said.

Rescue workers were called at 3:42 p.m. to the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani and found hotel workers performing CPR on the man. He was taken to Straub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the city medical examiner.

Kapi'olani Community College will conduct business-writing classes geared toward administrative assistants, supervisors, business owners and managers starting June 3.

Crews battle Schofield fire

Honolulu firefighters were called to assist yesterday with a fire at Schofield Barracks' West Range that burned about 75 acres.

The crews were dispatched at about 1:44 p.m. to assist federal firefighters, said Capt. Emmit Kane, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

The fire was declared under control at 5:27 p.m.


AAJA to sponsor golf tourney

The Asian American Journalists Association will host a golf tournament to raise money for scholarships and internships.

The tourney will be held June 11 at Royal Kunia Country Club. Entry fee is $100 per person ($75 for AAJA members), which includes lunch. The two-person scramble tournament tees off at 12:30 p.m.
