Four to receive education money
The Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i announced its scholarship winners, who will each receive $1,000 for education. They are Marygrace Simeon Barba of Waipahu High, daughter of Alfredo and Virginia Barba; Joice Marlee Castillo of Lahainaluna High, daughter of Reynaldo and Josephine Castillo; Sean Connelly of Castle High, son of Timothy Connelly and Teresa Fontanilla; and Cleofins Ramos of Waimea High, daughter of Feliciano and Juanita Ramos.
Outstanding UH alumni honored
The University of Hawai'i and the University of Hawai'i Alumni Association recently honored six outstanding alumni at its Distinguished Alumni Awards dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki. Recipients are: Allan Ikawa, president of Big Island Candies; Howard Karr, retired vice chairman of First Hawaiian Bank; Francis Oda, chairman and CEO of Group 70 International; Puongpun Sananikone, president and CEO of Pacific Management Resources; and Patrice Tanaka, CEO and creative director of PT & Co., a leading New York marketing and public relations firm.
The alumni association's 2003 Founders' Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to William S. Richardson, former Chief Justice of the Hawai'i State Supreme Court.
Meeting planners recognize HVCB
For the 13th consecutive year, meeting planners nationwide have honored the Hawai'i Visitors & Convention Bureau with a Pinnacle Award, recognizing HVCB's excellence in servicing meetings, incentive travel programs, trade shows and conventions.

Continental honors pair
Continental Airlines Hawai'i employees Ron Wright and Kathy Louie have been awarded the 25th Annual Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel President's award, given in recognition of Continental's commitment to education, including President Bush's "No Child Left Behind" initiative and the Federal TRIO programs.
WESTOP and Federal TRIO programs are national educational projects designed to ensure equal access to college for the disadvantaged and underrepresented youth of America, including the Pacific Islands.
PACT announces officers, board
Phillip Deaver, a partner in Bays Deaver Lung Rose & Baba attorneys-at-law, has been elected chairman of the board of directors for Parents and Children Together, or PACT. Other officers include vice chairman Lui Faleafine Jr., director of housing management for Urban Real Estate Co.; secretary Valerie Sylvester, regional manager of Bally Shoes; treasurer Lowell Kalapa, Tax Foundation of Hawai'i executive director; and past chair John Whalen, president of Plan Pacific.
New board members: Johnelle Kimura and Terri Lyn Torres, with Early Head Start/Head Start Program, and Kimberly Yatomi of American Savings Bank. The nonprofit PACT works to strengthen Hawai'i families, with programs such as Early Start, Head Start, Family Peace Center and Kuhio Park Terrace teen program and other projects.
Four win Elks scholarships
Four Hawai'i high school seniors have been awarded Elks National Foundation scholarships, each worth $4,000 over the next four years.
Selected were Andrew L. Savini of Kahuku, Marsha S. Ng of Honolulu, Curtis T. Lefrandt of 'Aiea and Kiani A.J. Arkus of Honolulu.
Ka Pouhana awardee named
Chennat Gopalakrishnan, a professor of natural resources and environmental management at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, has been named the recipient of the Ka Pouhana award by the UH College of Tropical Agricultural and Human Resources. A five-member student selection committee unanimously selected Gopalakrishnan for outstanding support of student learning and development.
PATCH's 2003 officers named
People Attentive to Children, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Hawai'i's childcare needs, announced new members of the 2003 officers and board of directors: Sherri Aoyama of American Savings Bank, vice president; William Kern of Pacific TechWorks, secretary; and Leona Seto-Mook of Richard Seto-Mook Realty, treasurer.
