Read Aloud gets $5,000

Read Aloud America has received a $5,000 grant from the Atherton Family Foundation to support its Read Aloud Program.

RAP, a literacy program that bring families together to share in reading, reaches more than 57,000 participants through 28 programs in Hawai'i schools.


$30,000 helps cancer research

The Kapi'olani Health Foundation received a $30,000 grant from the Alana Dung Research Foundation to support breast cancer treatment and prevention research by Dr. Laura Hoque.


HEI foundation gives $20,000

Hawaiian Electric Industries' Charitable Foundation has awarded $20,000 to the American Cancer Society to support two programs:

  • Camp Ikaika, a retreat for adolescents with cancer.
  • The Central Maui Relay for Life, which celebrates survival in the battle against cancer.


Bankoh assists Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has received Bank of Hawaii grants totaling $15,000:

  • $10,000 to The Salvation Army Family Services Office's Kula Kokua Day Care facility in Kaimuki to renovate its facility.
  • $5,000 to assist families in Guam affected by December's supertyphoon.


Youth mentor projects benefit

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu has received grants and donations totaling more than $51,500 to develop the organization's youth mentoring program.

Grants included: $12,500 from AARP; $9,000 from Jack in the Box Foundation; $5,456 from the David Murdock Institute for Business and Culture; $2,500 from the Rainee Barkhorn Charitable Foundation; $1,000 from NFL Charities; and $400 from Kukui Kauhale Inc.

Gifts included $3,000 from Charter Funding of Hawai'i and $4,032 from Jack in the Box of Hawai'i.

Also, $14,099 in endowment income was earned from a Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation contribution.


$20,000 fights teen smoking

The Hawai'i Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund of the Hawai'i Community Foundation has given $20,000 to the American Cancer Society for the initiative, "Leading Hawai'i's Youth Toward a Tobacco-Free Future.


Kapolei keiki to go to camp

Grace Pacific Corp. has awarded $10,000 to pay for an educational retreat at Camp Timberline in Makakilo for 72 honorees of Kapolei's Keiki of the Year Award for good citizenship. "


Bank promotes mental health

Mental Health Kokua has been awarded a $15,000 grant from Central Pacific Bank for its capital campaign. The money will go toward the expansion of residential services in East Hawai'i and on Maui.

Mental Health Kokua also has received a $25,000 grant from the G.N. Wilcox Foundation for the startup of residential services on Kaua'i.

Mental Health Kokua is in its 30th year of providing a range of community-based services statewide for residents who are in mental distress, emotional crisis or recovering from serious mental illness.


Atherton family helps hula goal

The Hula Preservation Society has been awarded a grant from the Atherton Family Foundation for its cultural preservation work.

The society documents hula traditions as well as the insights and experiences of elders in the community.
