Three men were charged yesterday with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly stomping and kicking a 21-year-old California man Saturday. The victim has been in a coma at The Queen's Medical Center for five days with critical head injuries.

According to an affidavit filed in District Court, a Queen's emergency room physician told police that the victim, Ivan Konstantinov Kaloyanov, suffered a "significant closed head injury" that could result in lifetime impairment. Police reported Kaloyanov today as still comatose but stable.

Johnston K. Kapua, 29; Solomon J. Kahalewai Jr., 23; and Christopher Charles Hicks, 19, allegedly mugged Kaloyanov at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Atkinson Drive and Kona Street. Kapua is being held on $75,000 bail while bail for Kahalewai and Hicks is $50,000. A preliminary hearing for all three men is scheduled Monday at District Court.

The affidavit said Kapua allegedly hit the victim after intervening in an argument between Kaloyanov and an unknown man at 2 a.m. outside the Blue Tropix nightclub at 1700 Kapi'olani Blvd. Kahalewai and Hicks were drawn into the sidewalk confrontation when they saw that their friend, Kapua, was involved, according to the affidavit.

Kaloyanov was pulled away from the confrontation by a friend, Daniel Luna and the two men ran in the makai direction on Kapi'olani, according to the affidavit. Kapua, Kahalewai and Hicks used Kahalewai's 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser to track down Kaloyanov and Luna at the corner of Atkinson Drive and Kona Street, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit states that Kahalewai and Hicks admitted to chasing, punching and/or kicking Kaloyanov while he was on the ground but that Kapua was "out of control and caused most of the injuries."
