2 may be barred from Waikiki

Honolulu prosecutors will request geographical restrictions be placed on two men charged with Sunday's beating of a tourist on Kalakaua Avenue and Pau Street. If granted by a District Court judge, the restrictions would prohibit Matthew Hauki, 19, and Kalahauoli Baptista, 18, from being in Waikiki.

Jim Fulton of the prosecuting attorney's office said prosecutors have been requesting Waikiki geographical restrictions be placed on suspects charged with crimes against tourists for over a year. The motion for restrictions against Hauki and Baptista will be made at their preliminary hearing tomorrow in District Court, said Fulton.

Hauki and Baptista are charged with second-degree assault for allegedly beating Joseph Melone, 27. Melone was taken unconscious and in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center at 10:07 p.m.

The two suspects are being held in lieu of $25,000 bail apiece. Charges are also pending against a 16-year-old boy in the case.
