Hollywood sizzle on tap for Maui Film Festival

The Maui Film Festival, June 11-15 at Wailea and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, will be the place to be for Hollywood names, hot flicks, media buzz and surprises.

HOPKINS
To sir, with love: Sir Anthony Hopkins, who sunk his teeth into "Hannibal," receives the Silversword Award (named after an indigenous plant that blooms on the slopes of Haleakala and revered by Hawaiians as a source of spiritual power); he will be interviewed live. From 5 to 7 p.m. June 13 at the Grand Wailea.

Meathead honor: Rob Reiner, Meathead in "All in the Family," will launch "Alex & Emma," his latest starring Kate Hudson and Luke Wilson, as the festival's opening night attraction. Reiner receives the "Lights Camera Passion" award, which honors a director whose career reflects dedication and commitment to create films with substance that reflect the triumph of the human spirit. From 6 to 7 p.m. June 12, site to be announced.

Stellar moment: The first "Stella" award, named after the wife of festival founder Barry Rivers, will be bestowed upon Geena Davis, for her contributions to advance the stature of women in films. Date, site to be announced.

The Navigator: Greg Kinnear receives the inaugural "Navigation" award for a "career of distinction." Date, site to be announced.

Movies that matter: "Jet Lag," with Juliette Binoche and Jena Reno; "Shaolin Soccer," the Hong Kong comedy/sports caper; "Thirteen," a Holly Hunter flick that won a directing prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival; "Step Into Liquid," a documentary by Dana Brown, son of Bruce "Endless Summer" Brown, shot at various surfing spots including Jaws off Maui; "Together," from Chen "Farewell My Concubine" Kaige. Screening times vary.

Dressed to im-press: "E!," "Entertainment Tonight," Premiere Magazine, MovieLine, L.A. Times, Variety, Hollywood Reporter are among the media expected.

Tickets: $10 adults, $5 children; $100, $175, $500, $750 passes available for various series (at Castle Theatre, at McCoy Theatre, at Bahama Sand Dance Theatre).
