$5,000 to help cancer patients
The Theodore A. Vierra Fund of the Hawai'i Community Foundation has presented the American Cancer Society with a $5,000 grant.
The money will be used for the Persons in Need program that provides quality-of-life services to Big Island cancer patients 50 or older.
The society lends home-care equipment and provides medical supplies to cancer patients. The grant will also arrange free airfare for patients who must travel to O'ahu for treatment.
$8,000 benefits military families
The Armed Service YMCA has received two grants totaling $8,000 to assist young military families stationed in Hawai'i: $5,000 from the Gannett Foundation for the ASYMCA preschool arts and crafts program; $3,000 from the Junior League of Honolulu for the Welcome Baby home visitation program, which provides new parents with information on healthy pregnancy and parenthood.
Finance program gets $3,000
Smith Barney has announced a $3,000 Citigroup Foundation grant to the Academy of Finance program at McKinley High School. The program teaches students about careers in financial services.
