A 43-year-old man died at St. Francis Medical Center-West last night after his sport-utility vehicle crashed on the H-1 Freeway in Waipahu.

Honolulu police said the driver may have been speeding.

The 1986 Ford Explorer crashed at 10:01 p.m. near the Military Access Road overpass.

The SUV veered off the roadway, went up an embankment and struck a signpost, Honolulu police investigator Sgt. William Watkins said.

Police said they did not know why the truck went off the roadway.

No other people were involved in the crash.

The driver was taken to the medical center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:52 p.m.

As of this morning, the medical examiner's office had not confirmed his identity.

The death was the 36th traffic fatality of the year on O'ahu.

That compares with 29 traffic fatalities for the same period in 2002, a 24 percent increase.
