Arson suspected in fire at school

Police suspect arson was the cause of an early morning fire that did $20,000 worth of damage to Kailua Intermediate School yesterday.

Firefighters responded to a 12:55 a.m. alarm at the school and had the flames under control by 1:13 a.m., said Capt. Emmit Kane, a spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department. Most of the damages were confined to a breezeway just outside the school woodshop, Kane said. There were no injuries and students attended class as scheduled, Kane said.



Ka'a'awa water break limits flow

The Board of Water Supply asked residents from Ka'a'awa to Waimanalo to conserve water yesterday while a crew repaired a damaged 30-inch transmission main on Kamehameha Highway in Ka'a'awa. Repairs were completed last night.

A private contractor damaged the water main next to Kualoa Ranch yesterday morning, officials said.

"This water main distributes a large portion of water servicing the Kane'ohe, Kailua and Waimanalo communities," said Wanda Yamane, with the BWS.



Cancer Society benefit June 27

Participants are being sought for the annual American Cancer Society Ko'olauloa Relay for Life June 27-28 in Hau'ula.

The relay is an all-night event intended to raise money for the cancer society and raise awareness of the disease.

Anyone interested in having a group participate in the event or to make a donation, page event co-chair Gwen Valparaiso at 584-3087.

Storytellers part of 'Sunset' event

The gold, silver and bronze medal winners of the 54th Waialua Lion's Club storytelling contest will perform at the North Shore Sunset on the Beach event from noon to 3 p.m. tomorrow.

The program, hosted in partnership with the Waialua Public Library, will take place at the library's booth next to the Waialua Community Center booth at Ali'i Beach Park. Sunset on the Beach hours are 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. today, noon to 10 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.



NEIGHBOR ISLAND

Convict barred from West Maui

WAILUKU, Maui — A man convicted of a number of thefts dating to last year in West Maui has been released from jail but ordered to stay out of the area.

Circuit Judge Joel August, following the terms of a plea agreement, included a requirement that Solomon Moke Kane, 35, stay out of the area from Olowalu to Kapalua unless he gets permission from his probation officer.

Kane pleaded no contest to second-degree theft, two counts of theft of a credit card, fraudulent use of a credit card, attempted second-degree theft, third-degree theft and auto theft.
