Hawai'i has trampoline, tumbling champion

Hawai'i's Nani Vercruyssen placed first in three competitions at the USAG Trampoline and Tumbling State Region 1 & 2 Championships held last weekend in San Diego, Calif.
Vercruyssen, competing at the highest level 10 in the 11-12 age bracket, won the girls trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling competitions.
Also, Matt Moniz won the boys (15-16) level 10 trampoline, Kelsen Onigama captured the boys (7-8) level 8 tumbling and Tiare Bolongan tied for first in the girls (13-14) level 8 trampoline.
Regions 1 and 2 encompasses 16 states in the West, Northwest and Mountain areas.

TRACK
UH's Berger honored: University of Hawai'i track athlete Carolyn Berger has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District VIII University Division Women's Track & Field and Cross Country second team. Berger, a senior majoring in political science, has a 3.92 GPA.
District VIII includes Hawai'i, Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.
Berger participates in the steeplechase and hurdles. Earlier this year, she posted a 1:05.16 in the 400-meter hurdles, which is the third-fastest in UH history. She is also the former school record holder in the 3000 steeplechase.
Meanwhile, four UH athletes are scheduled to participate in the NCAA West Regionals today and tomorrow at Stanford. The regional qualifiers from Hawai'i are Novelle Murray (discus), Hanna Bremler (1500), Victoria Chang (5000), and Olivia Smoody (high jump).
RODEO
State high school finals: The 16th annual State Finals Rodeo, sponsored by the Hawai'i High School Rodeo Association, will be held June 13-15 at Parker Ranch arena in Waimea on the Big Island.
Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
Ryanna Cambra, a senior at Radford, and Alex Schuman, a junior at Maryknoll, are scheduled to defend their all-around state titles.
Top four contestants in each event qualify for the National Finals High School Rodeo Championship, July 20-27, at Farmington, N.M.
