FAITH BRIEFS
Guest speaker at New Hope

Advertiser Staff

Darrell Scott, the father of Columbine victim Rachel Joy Scott, will be a guest at two Sunday services on June 8.

Members of New Hope Pearl Community will hear him at their 8 and 10 a.m. services, which take place in Pearl City High School's cafeteria.

Rachel Joy Scott died on April 20, 1999, in the shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. Her death has been discussed often in Christian circles because it was reported that, when asked at gunpoint if she believed in God, she said, "Yes." Then she was shot.

Church planning special events

  • Chris Cerna, a visually disabled recording artist who came to Hawai'i in 1991 for reconstructive surgery and artificial eye implants and now attends the University of Hawai'i, will be the guest pianist at the 10:15 a.m. service.

The church's address is 2651 Pali Highway. Information: 595-3935.

Mideast visit to be discussed

Susan Van Dongen, an International Solidarity Movement volunteer who recently returned from Nablu in the occupied territories, will discuss "Life in Occupied Palestine" at 7 p.m. June 6.

The free event, co-sponsored by Not in Our Name and Friends of Sabeel in Hawaii, will take place at Church of the Crossroads' Weaver Hall.

Van Dongen, an activist from Northern California, toured the Mideast with the fact-finding group Earthstewards in 1991 after the first Gulf War, and in 1993. In 1998, she served for five months as a volunteer nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in the occupied territories through St. Andrews Medical Mission.
