Sport utility driver dies after H-1 crash

A 43-year-old man died at St. Francis Medical Center-West Thursday night after his sport utility vehicle crashed on H-1 Freeway in Waipahu.

Honolulu police said the driver may have been speeding.

The 1986 Ford Explorer crashed at 10:01 p.m. near the Military Access Road overpass.

The SUV veered off the roadway, went up an embankment and struck a signpost, Honolulu police investigator Sgt. William Watkins said.

Police said they did not know why the truck went off the roadway.

No other people were involved in the crash.

The driver was taken to the medical center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:52 p.m.

The death was the 36th traffic fatality of the year on O'ahu.



Police get fugitive after Kailua chase

A man who was wanted by police for outstanding warrants and for questioning in two crimes was captured yesterday afternoon in Kailua.

Brandon O'Brien, 24, was arrested after a 15-minute foot chase by police officers in Kailua. He was wanted for two felony probation revocation warrants, and contempt and traffic warrants, police said.

He also is a suspect in a May 22 break-in of a car in Keolu Hills, police said. Bank cards taken from the car were used at an American Savings Bank ATM machine on Hamakua Drive, police said.



Hawai'i Kai home raided by FBI

FBI agents yesterday raided a Hawai'i Kai home in the 1000 block of Lunalilo Home Road in connection with an identity-theft investigation.

Several people were seen handcuffed outside a home. FBI spokesman Larry Futa confirmed a search warrant was served at a home but declined further comment.



Police find witness for murder trial

Police have found an 18-year-old man who is scheduled to be a witness at the trial of a man accused of a December 2002 murder.

Don Iiga was found Thursday afternoon at a Waikiki youth outreach center. A day earlier, police issued a CrimeStoppers bulletin seeking the public's help in locating Iiga.

Police and city prosecutors said Iiga was at the Ala Wai Community Park Dec. 28 when Odin Ortiz was shot to death.

Anibal Ortiz, who is not related to Odin Ortiz, has been charged with murder and Iiga was scheduled to testify at his trial.



Boy, 17, arrested in teacher attacks

Police have arrested a 17-year-old student on suspicion of attacking two female teachers at Wai'anae High School.

The boy allegedly grabbed a teacher, 58, by the hair and struck her head against the floor.

A second teacher, 59, who tried to assist the first teacher allegedly was shoved to the ground by the boy.

The student reportedly kicked both teachers while they were on the ground, and then fled.

He was arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and two counts of second-degree assault before being released pending further investigation.
