BYUH tennis player on women's top honor list

Advertiser Staff

Brigham Young-Hawai'i sophomore Adrienn Hegedus has been named the women's tennis nominee for the 2002-03 Honda NCAA II Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.

The nomination is given to the top athlete in each of 12 women's sports and carries with it a $1,000 donation from Honda to the athletic fund of the student-athlete's university.

The winner will be announced in early June and will be presented with the award at Columbia University in New York City on June 23. The winner's school will receive a $5,000 donation to its athletic fund.Ê

Hegedus led the Seasiders to a second consecutive NCAA II national championship and 37-0 record by compiling a 31-1 record at No. 1 singles and a 26-4 record at No. 1 doubles. She was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and the BYU-Hawai'i team is 66-0 in dual matches during her career.

Hegedus, from Zrinyi Utca, Hungary, was also honored by the Pacific West Conference as a first-team All-Academic performer. She carries a 3.34 grade-point average as a sports management major.

Somervilles welcome first child: The wife of Hawai'i Pacific men's and women's tennis coach Henry Somerville, who missed the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships last month to stay home to care for her during her high-risk pregnancy, gave birth to a boy this week.

Somerville said his wife, Rowena, gave birth to Andrew Keaunui Somerville on Monday.

Somerville's tennis teams advanced to the national championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., last month.

The Sea Warrior men finished second to defending champion Brigham Young-Hawai'i at the national championships on May 12. The Lady Sea Warriors (12-7) were eliminated in the first round.

Seasiders recruit Division I basketball transfer: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's basketball team signed Utah State transfer Michael Stowell, a 6-3 guard from San Juan Capistrano, Calif., for the upcoming season.

In two seasons, Stowell did not see much playing time for the NCAA tournament Aggies, a team that was laden with upperclassmen. He averaged 1.5 points and 0.6 rebounds per game in 17 games this past season.
