Lake is new Moanalua volleyball girls' coach

Advertiser Staff

Tommy Lake's second career is all about volleyball and his newest challenge will be as head girls' coach at Moanalua High next season.

Lake, 48, is a retired Honolulu Fire Department captain. He was appointed coach last week by Moanalua athletic director Dana Dias. He replaces Sheri Sagayaga, whose teams made it to the state tournament in two of the past three seasons.

Sagayaga, the coach since 1999, said that she did not resign. Her standard year-to-year coaching contract was not renewed.

Lake said he is "fully involved in volleyball," coaching high school junior varsity teams and with the O'ahu Volleyball Club the past eight years, since he retired from HFD. He coached JVs at Kamehameha last season.

He is junior (18-under) volleyball coordinator of the Aloha region for USA Volleyball and will take a team to the Junior Olympics in Atlanta this summer. He directs USA Volleyball High Performance camp tryouts in Hawai'i.

Lake and Richard Lau won the 2001 World Police-Fire senior doubles championship at Indianapolis.

Dorian loses in Fiji: Shane Dorian of Kailua, Kona, was eliminated in the second round of the Quiksilver Fiji Pro yesterday in 4- to 5-foot waves at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji.

Australia's Chris Davidson defeated Dorian, 13.97-10.87. Dorian scored a 7.67 to take the lead late in the heat, but Davidson responded with an 8.5 to regain control. Dorian did not catch any waves in the final five minutes of the heat.

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb advanced to the third round earlier in the week. They are the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the contest, which is the fourth stop on this year's World Championship Tour.
