Makeover at Pearlridge Sears finished

Sears, Roebuck & Co. has finished remodeling and expanding its Pearlridge Center store, its second Hawai'i store makeover that is part of a nationwide program for the department store chain.

The store converted about 25,000 square feet of stock area to give it 129,793 square feet of retail space, making room for wider aisles and expanded shoe, appliance, electronic and home-improvement departments.

Centralized check-out stations, shopping carts and new signs were also part of the redesign, which was implemented at the Ala Moana Sears last year and is scheduled for the other three Hawai'i Sears stores later.

Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears last year said it planned to spend $800 million remodeling 600 of the company's 870 stores over four years in an effort to double retail operating profits by 2004.
