Chaminade stops Billings in 4 games

Chaminade defeated Montana State-Billings, 29-31, 30-20, 33-31, 30-23, to split a two-match women's volleyball series at Billings, Mont., last night.

Valasi Sepulona had 19 kills and 20 digs in Chaminade's non-conference win.

Chaminade is 10-10. Montana State Billings is 5-17.

Olivia Munro of Montana State-Billings had 22 kills and 22 digs.

Western New Mexico wins: Kane'ohe's Kim Tano, a St. Francis alum, had 13 kills to lead Western New Mexico to a 30-25, 22-30, 30-23, 30-22 non-conference victory last night at Silver City, N.M.

Western New Mexico is 14-13. Hilo is 6-14.

Sara Pilgreen led Hilo with 14 kills.

Liz Narkon, another St. Francis alum, had 12 kills.



SWIMMING AND DIVING

UH men, women win three: The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming and diving teams each went 3-1 in dual meets yesterday in the final day of the Big West Shootout in Irvine, Calif.

The men defeated host UC Irvine, 73-40, UC Santa Barbara, 77-34 and Cal Poly, 100-11. They fell to Washington, 61-50. The men are 6-2 this season.

The women (7-1) defeated UC Santa Barbara, 73-38, UC Irvine, 81-32, and Cal Poly, 92-19. They lost their first dual meet of the season to Washington, 59-53.

UH men turning in NCAA provisional qualifying times were Peter Thew in the 200 freestyle (1:38.71) and Cheyne Bloch, who won the 200 individual medley (1:49.52).

Rainbow Wahine Yan Chen turned in an NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 200 individual medley (2:03.58).

CROSS COUNTRY

UH women eighth: The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team finished eighth after scoring 186 points in the 5,000-meter Western Athletic Conference Championships yesterday at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, Calif.

Nevada won the meet with 43 points, followed by Texas-El Paso (63) and Rice (88).

The Rainbow Wahine were led by Dana Buchanan, who finished 22nd in 18 minutes, 45 seconds. She had the fastest freshman time in the meet.

Nevada's Abigail McAllister won in 17:07.



SURFING

Xcel Pro begins: Hawai'i surfers Arnold Dowling, Aamion Goodwin, Dustin Cuizon, Kamalei Alexander and Kainoa McGee were among the standouts during the opening day of the 20th annual Xcel Pro yesterday.

The first and second rounds of the contest were staged in waves of 6 to 8 feet at Sunset Beach.

The top-seeded surfers have byes into the later rounds. The contest, which is considered the kick-off event for the big-wave season on O'ahu's North Shore, will continue today, conditions permitting.



MEETINGS

Quarterback Club: University of Hawai'i football head coach June Jones and assistant coach Cal Lee are scheduled to speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Ballroom.

Also scheduled to speak is Doris Sullivan of the Hawai'i Sports Network college recruitment and placement.
