Deaths may be murder, suicide

Maui police were investigating the shooting deaths of a Kahului man and his wife as a murder and suicide.

The bodies of Jose and Lailani Delos Santos were discovered in the carport of their home at 685 Pona Way by their 17-year-old son yesterday afternoon, acting Lt. Ronald Hiyakumoto said. Investigators believe that Jose Delos Santos, 62, shot his wife and then himself, Hiyakumoto said.

Family members told police that Jose Delos Santos suffered from mental problems and had been acting strangely recently, Hiyakumoto said. Drugs or a domestic issue do not appear to have been factors, he added. Neighbors reported hearing two shots before the bodies were found. A firearm was found.

Delos Santos worked at Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.
