Europe tour a summer highlight

Five Hawai'i students participated in a 25-day summer concert tour of Europe.

Heidi Shimada of St. Andrew's Priory; Kimo Helekahi Jr. of Hana, Maui; Azusa Hirao of Waikoloa, Hawai'i; Andrea Hofmann of Kahului, Maui; and Julianne Hiu of Moanalua High School participated in the Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus.

The national organization toured Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Luxembourg.


Audubon Society honors mayor

The Hawai'i Audubon Society has selected Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris for its 2003 President's Award because of his "sincere and persistent dedication to environmental protection and education in Hawai'i."

Harris was recognized for hosting the Pacific Environmental Summit, creating the Hanauma Bay Education Center and initiating recycling programs, vision projects, the Ocean Fest Event and the Keiki Tree Project.

"I am deeply honored by this award because it is bestowed by an organization with a long and distinguished tradition of caring for our ecosystems and natural resources," Harris said in a written statement. "Mahalo to all my administration who have worked so hard to implement our policies to safeguard our precious environment for future generations."


Judge Marks is Jurist of the Year

State Judge Victoria Marks, of the 1st Circuit Court was selected by Chief Justice Ronald Moon to receive the Hawai'i State Judiciary's first annual Jurist of the Year award. The award recognizes a full-time judge for exceptional judicial competence.

Marks joined the Judiciary in 1988 when she was appointed a per diem Family Court judge. During her tenure on the Circuit Court, she served as chairwoman or member on 23 committees.

She is chairwoman of the Supreme Court Standing Committee on the Rules of Evidence and serves on a number of other committees.

An active member of the community, she has participated as a featured speaker, panel member, guest judge, facilitator and trainer at more than 100 events.


'Top Cops' for 2003 selected

Security Resources, a leading security systems integrator in the Pacific Region, has received the Outstanding Organization Award from the Law Enforcement and Security Coalition of Hawai'i.

The 2003 Top Cop awards included:

  • The Elwood J. McGuire Award, presented to Peter Carlisle, prosecuting attorney of the City and County of Honolulu.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Alfred Streck, retired colonel U.S. Air Force Security.
  • Judge C. Nils Tavares Award, presented to Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue.

Nearly 30 people from various security associations, federal, state and city and county agencies and the military were recognized.
