THE LEFT LANE
UNICEF purchases support relief efforts

Advertiser Staff and News Services

UNICEF, the children's relief organization that's taken over Halloween, wants your Christmas money, too.

The annual UNICEF 2003 Fall/Winter catalog, available online at www.unicefusa.org, has cards, gifts, gift wrap, ornaments and more. They're pricier than drugstore cards, but you'll get plenty of warm fuzzies when you read the insets telling you how $15 can buy three doses of polio vaccine for 60 children in India.

Here's your chance to see Sony's latest

A DVD camcorder.

Tiny cameras that fit two or three to a palm. A laptop computer with a TV.

Every type of flat-screen TV you can imagine.

Goodness, do we even have to mention the $35 coupons, free giveaways and free one-hour Internet access to get you to check out this year's Sony Expo?

All you need to know now is this: From 10 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, the expo is in high gear in the Ala Moana Hotel's Hibiscus Ballroom.

Add unexpected cool to wardrobe with kilt

While little girls wear kilts to school and women wear them to work, even modern men have been known to don one at least occasionally — as seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts," opening today in New York.

To keep the look modern, Melody Harris Jensbach, design director for Esprit's women's division, suggests wearing the traditional garment with something unexpected. "Esprit's mini kilt skirt is worn low on the hip. Try pairing it with a cool biker jacket," Jensbach says. Stiletto heels or a very long sweater would also add edge.

Other ideas for kilt coordinates:

  • A black T-shirt, as a nod to 1980s punk.
  • A white blouse and loafers, to finish the preppy look.
  • Tall boots, for a polished-yet-urban vibe.
