ILH volleyball titles still up in air; OIA to be decided Thursday

Advertiser Staff

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu volleyball championships will be decided in the next couple of days ... maybe.

In boys competition, first-round champion Iolani (13-1) visits Kamehameha (13-1) at 4:30 p.m. today. If Kamehameha wins, it will be the second-round champion and will play Iolani for the overall championship. That match would be at Iolani, at a date and time to be announced.

If Iolani wins today, there will be a three-way tie for first place in the second round. Iolani athletic director Carl Schroers, the ILH volleyball coordinator, said a playoff involving Iolani, Kamehameha and Punahou (12-3) will be conducted to determine the second-round champion.

If the playoff winner is not Iolani, then that team would play Iolani for the overall title. Iolani, which has not won an ILH title since 1979, has already secured a state tournament berth. Either Kamehameha or Punahou will earn the ILH's second berth.

The girls picture is a bit simpler. If visiting Punahou (16-0) defeats Kamehameha (15-1) tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., it will be the overall ILH champion. If Kamehameha wins, there will be a winner-take-all match at Punahou for the overall title. The date and time will be announced.

Both teams have clinched state tournament berths.

OIA: Kalani will take on Moanalua in the girls' championship at about 6 p.m. on Thursday at McKinley.

The East champion Falcons, one of the top seeds of the OIA tournament, are seeking their first league title, while the Menehunes are trying to win their first since 2000.

In the boys' championship at 5 p.m. at McKinley, Mililani will play Kahuku. The Trojans won their only OIA titles from 1992-1994. The Red Raiders are looking for their second crown; their first came in 1995.

All of the semifinalists have earned state berths.

In third-place matches in the OIA starting at 5 p.m. today at McKinley, Kalaheo will play Campbell for boys and Kahuku will play Roosevelt for girls. The four teams have secured state berths.
