NOTES
Crusaders taking aim at another state crown

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Saint Louis School is setting its sights on a fifth consecutive title at today's state air riflery championships at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

Boys competition starts at 8:30 a.m. with the girls to follow at 11:30 a.m.

Saint Louis coach Zig Look is expecting a tight contest.

"This year, scores have been up (around the state)," Look said. "Expect to see some good scores this year."

Unlike league meets, which were held outdoors, the state meet will be inside for the second consecutive year. Last year, the meet was held at the Dole Cannery ballrooms. Free of the outdoor elements and with halogen lighting, Look said conditions are conducive to higher scoring.

In girls' competition, Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Sacred Hearts, also coached by Look, will try to win its first title since 2000. Punahou is two-time defending champion.

Six of the eight Division I state tournament berths have been determined.

Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Kaua'i and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Saint Louis, as well as Kahuku, Kailua, Mililani and Farrington of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association have state berths.

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation and Maui Interscholastic League will determine theirs in coming weeks.

Damien (ILH) and Waimea (KIF), as well as the OIA's Kapolei and 'Aiea, have Division II state berths secured, leaving two openings for the six-team tournament. (The KIF and OIA champion have first-round byes.)

BIIF: Two two-tiered tournaments start Friday.

In Division I, third-seeded Waiakea plays second-seeded Hilo at 7 p.m. at Wong Stadium. The winner plays at top-seeded Kealakehe on Nov. 14.

In Division II, third-seeded Honoka'a will play at No. 2 Konawaena at 7 p.m. Friday. The winner plays at No. 1 seed Hawai'i Prep on Nov. 15.

The champions advance to their respective state tournaments.

MIL: Defending champion Baldwin will play Maui at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in a regular-season finale.

The Bears, the league's first-round champ, can clinch the overall title and a Division I state berth with a victory. If Maui wins, it wins the second-round title and forces a play-off with Baldwin next week for the overall title and state berth.

Meanwhile, Lahainaluna can clinch a Division II state berth with a win at King Kekaulike on Saturday.

If not, the Lunas will have to play off against Pac-Three next week for the state berth.
