Cal Lee will return to coach Islanders

The Hawaiian Islanders of arenafootball2 announced yesterday they have extended the contract of head coach Cal Lee for the 2004 season.

Last season, Lee guided the Islanders to the league's second best turnaround season — from 5-11 in 2002 to a 11-7 finish and the Western Division Championship.

"It feels really good to be back for a second season," Lee said. "What makes it special is that we've turned the corner and now we are going to continue to make big strides."

Lee is also the linebackers coach for the University of Hawai'i football team, which is currently 6-3 on the season.

SURFING

Irons, Robb advance in Brazil: Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb advanced to the fourth round of the Nova Schin Festival yesterday.

The third round was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at Joaquina, Florianopolis, Brazil.

Irons was one of the top performers of the day, recording scores of 9.17 and 6.5 in his victory over Brazlian wildcard entry Tanio Barreto.

Robb defeated Brazil's Guilherme Herdy in the third round, 12.84-6.67.

VOLLEYBALL

Chaminade swept on road: St. Francis School graduates Kim Tano and Liz Narkon led Western New Mexico's victory over Chaminade yesterday in a Pacific West Conference match at Silver Springs, N.M.

Tano had 14 kills, and Narkon and Laree Green each added 11 in a 30-27, 30-23, 30-25 win.

Western New Mexico improved to 15-13 overall and 3-6 in the PacWest.

Kahala Kabalis had 18 kills and 19 digs to lead Chaminade, which fell to 10-11 and 4-5.

Hilo loses in five: Olivia Munro had 23 kills and Jessica Bratton added 17 as Montana State-Billings beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-19, 27-30, 30-28, 26-30, 16-14, in a PacWest match yesterday at Billings, Mont.

Tiffanie Ollison had 19 kills for Hilo, which fell to 6-15 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

Billings is 6-17, 2-7.

BYUH's Lo honored: Brigham Young-Hawai'i junior setter Kaala Lo has been named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week.

Lo dished out 127 assists this past week.

SWIMMING

UH's Mackey honored by WAC: The University of Hawai'i's Nicole Mackey has been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.

Mackey placed in the top three in four events at the two-day Big West Shootout this past weekend.

GOLF

UH men tied for fourth: The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a 23-over-par 599 yesterday and is tied for fourth after two rounds of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.

Pro-Scratch Championship: Kevin Hayashi and Elton Tanaka shot a 59 yesterday and lead by three strokes after the first round of the Bridgestone Pro-Scratch Championship at Pearl City Country Club.
