QUICK BITES
Hawai'i gets No. 1

By Wanda A. Adams

CHAN
Jackie Chan himself is expected to be on hand when the first U.S. Jackie's Kitchen restaurant opens on Ala Moana Center's fourth level in December — the exact date is still under wraps.

What does the martial-arts movie star with the sense of humor and charming smile know about the restaurant biz? Well, there are more than 40 Jackie's Kitchen restaurants throughout Asia, so his operation must be doing something right.

His local press contact, Mona Wood, says it was Chan's wish that the first U.S. outlet be in Hawai'i because he likes it here and wanted to help the business climate in tough post-9-11 economic times. The restaurant will feature an Asian menu with Island and Mainland influences designed by chef Michael Longworth (formerly with Sam Choy's and Buca di Beppo) and the "flair" bar (think Tom Cruise in "Cocktail") is being set up by Cache Bourne, who auditioned bartenders with hilarious, glass-smashing results last week.

Win a new kitchen

Betty Crocker may not be a real person, but she has one heck of a kitchen — well, 19 kitchens, 50 ovens, 19 dishwashers, a 375-square-foot walk-in refrigerator and 7,000 square feet of workspace. The Betty Crocker Kitchens in Minneapolis, where more than 50,000 recipes are tested every year, have received a remodel. Interested in a tour — and a kitchen remodel of your own?

You can get both if you win the Betty Crocker Novice Contest, becoming the fourth member of the consumer panel called Team Betty Crocker. The first prize is a $15,000 charge card at Home Depot to be used in remodeling your home kitchen and a trip for two to tour the Betty Crocker headquarters. To enter, submit a VHS video cassette or DVD describing a food, cooking or entertaining dilemma and why the Betty Crocker Kitchens is the place to solve it. Go to www.bettycrocker.com for rules.
