Sisters Eri and Pippa Macdonald of Kailua combined to win 17 state championships in cross country and track during their years at Punahou School. But until last Saturday, they had never run side-by-side in the same race.

"Well, maybe on the beach or something for a workout," said their father, Duncan.

Saturday's race was no day at the beach. It was the Pac-10 Conference championships, and Eri (Punahou '99) was running for Oregon and Pippa (Punahou '03) for Cal.

Eri, a senior, finished 16th with a 6-kilometer time of 22 minutes, 19.6 seconds. Pippa, a freshman, placed 67th in 25:11.70.

Duncan Macdonald, who said Eri is "having her best season ever," took a break from coaching Punahou's girls to attend the meet on a "cold and overcast" day at Washington State's campus in Pullman.

Eri and Pippa, who together won eight straight 800-meter state titles, never ran against each other growing up because they are four years apart.

"The only reason it happened this time is because Eri redshirted her junior year," Duncan said. "It was a historical moment, at least for our family."

NOTES: Portland State junior Annie Kawasaki (St. Francis '01 of Honolulu) finished 32nd in 19:21 at the 5K Big Sky championships Saturday. ... San Diego State sophomore Christal Cuadra (Maryknoll '02 of Honolulu) finished 42nd in 24:24 at the 6K Mountain West Conference championships Saturday.

Football

Palomar freshman receiver Caleb Spencer (Kamehameha '03 of Honolulu) caught a 44-yard touchdown pass in a 21-3 win over Orange Coast Saturday. Spencer had six catches for 109 yards. Meanwhile, Orange Coast sophomore quarterback Kelika Higa (Saint Louis '01 of Kailua) completed 17 of 35 passes for 185 yards, but was intercepted twice.

Basketball

Santa Barbara junior forward Brandy Richardson (Kalaheo '01 of 'Aiea) had 11 points and seven rebounds Monday in an 87-71 exhibition win against Latvian Select.

Richardson worked on her outside shooting and interior game this summer. "Those were my two goals I had set for myself. I finished the game 5-of-6 on the inside, so I think it helped."

Swimming

Colorado State freshman Samantha Moran (Waipahu '03) had two second-place finishes in a dual meet against Colorado Saturday.

She finished the 1000-yard freestyle in 11 minutes, 41.31 seconds, and the 500 in 5:43.65.
