Young, single, educated residents leaving Hawai'i

Advertiser Staff

A U.S. Census report released this week shows Hawai'i lost 2,157 more single, young, college-educated residents than it gained during a recent five-year period.

The report, which was released Monday, said 6,738 single, college-educated people of ages 25 to 39 moved to Hawai'i from 1995 to 2000, while 8,895 left.

The net migration rate for the young, single and college-educated was close to the net migration rate for the state's entire population, and ranked in the middle of the pack for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the Census Bureau said.

Nevada, Colorado and Georgia had the highest rates of newcomers who were young, single and college-educated.

North Dakota, Iowa and South Dakota had the highest rate of people in that category who moved away.
