Fewer foreign students could hurt economy

Well, the numbers are in. And yes, post-Sept. 11 visa restrictions are taking a toll on the influx of foreign students to the United States.

The Institute of International Education reports that new student admissions from predominantly Muslim countries have declined. As we've previously pointed out, foreign students contribute to the economy and the worldliness and wealth of our educational institutions. Here in Hawai'i, they contribute some $125 million a year.

Granted, at least two of the terrorists who perpetrated the Sept. 11 attacks entered the country on student visas. But several others entered on business visas or crossed the borders illegally. Smart screening measures should be applied to all, not just those who come here to study.
