UH women golfers tie for 12th

The University of Hawai'i women's team shot a final-round 311 yesterday to finish tied for 12th in the 17-team Kent Youel Invitational at the par-72 Kapolei Golf Course.

UH finished at 935. Oklahoma won with 293—889, edging Washington (289—891). San Jose State (302) and Long Beach State (294) tied for third with 907.

Sara Odelius led UH with 77—227, tying for 13th. Fellow Rainbow Wahine freshman Dale Gammie shot 79—230, tying for 27th.

Washington's Paige Jackson took medalist honors with 71—214. She was followed by Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum (215) and UC Irvine's Angela Won and New Mexico State's Lehua Wise (Kaua'i High graduate), who both shot 221.

MORE GOLF

Hayashi, Tanaka prevail: Kevin Hayashi and Elton Tanaka shot a second-round 67 Tuesday to win the Aloha Section PGA 2003 Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship by three strokes at Pearl County Club.

Jeff Ferry and Robbie Yoshimura finished second at 129, followed by Mark Takahama and Shawn Tanoue at 131.

VOLLEYBALL

Hawai'i teams ranked: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball teams remained in fourth and sixth place, respectively, in the NCAA II Pacific Regional Poll, while Chaminade dropped one spot to eighth yesterday.

BYUH (18-2) won the automatic berth to the regional tournament by winning the Pacific West Conference title. HPU (15-5) and Chaminade (10-12) are vying for at-large bids.

The poll is used to determine invitations to the NCAA II postseason tournament and the seedings for that tournament.

WATER POLO

BYUH rated No. 4: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team was ranked fourth in the Western Water Polo Association ranking yesterday.

BYUH (12-6) was the top Hawai'i school in the poll. Chaminade (3-8) was ranked 14th.

The Western Water Polo Association invites eight teams to the league's postseason tournament at Redlands, Calif. Three spots are already taken.
