GOLF BRIEFS
Million Dollar Shot qualifying to begin

Advertiser Staff

Several O'ahu golf courses will participate in the "Take a Swing at Crime in the Sony Open" every Saturday this month and next.

Participants donate $10 and attempt to hit into a designated area on a par-3 hole. Those that do, qualify for the finals of the Sony Open Million Dollar Shot contest at Waialae Country Club on Jan. 18 — the last day of the Sony Open in Hawai'i.

Money raised will go to Crimestoppers Honolulu.

The initial schedule is:

  • Saturday: Pearl Country Club, Hawai'i Kai and Luana Hills, from 8 a.m.;
  • Nov. 15: Turtle Bay and Ko Olina, from 8 a.m., and Coral Creek, from 7 a.m.

Additional sites will be announced.

Extra volunteers will be needed at the Sony Open in January to allow Tourcast — live play-by-play — to expand and cover every shot by every player. The system is available at pgatour.com and realone.com.

Volunteers will be required to work morning or afternoon shifts and must make a four- or five-day commitment. Applications are available at friendsofhawaii.org or by e-mail at ealagoy@hotmail.com.

Kageyama new Ka'anapali GM

Ed Kageyama, president of the Aloha Section PGA, was named general manager of the Ka'anapali Golf Courses on Maui by Billy Casper Golf, which will operate the North and South courses.

Kageyama had been a court-appointed receiver for the last 19 months when Ka'anapali was in receivership and foreclosure.

Joining Kageyama, a former GM at Luana Hills and director of golf at Turtle Bay Resort, on the Ka'anapali staff are head golf professional Scott Ashworth, senior golf course superintendent Tim Canute and Chris Smallman, clubhouse manager.

Shootout set at Mauna Lani

The T&L Golf Travel Industry Shootout will be Saturday at Mauna Lani on the Big Island. The event will feature more than $80,000 in prizes, including two new cars, for holes in one.

The shootout begins from the Mauna Lani's South Course at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Entry fee is $145 per player.
