THE LEFT LANE
Old toy still dialed in

Advertiser Staff and News Services

If you're an early-bird Christmas shopper looking for stocking stuffers for your kids, better make a quick stop at a toy store to pick up an Etch A Sketch.

Yep. The retro game where you can be an artist with just two knobs is getting a boost from Will Ferrell's new show "Elf," opening tonight at local theaters.

We won't give away the story, but we will say the Ferrell puts a lot of work in with Etch A Sketch during the holiday flick, enough to make adults want to go out and find one for old-time's sake and to makes kids want to put down the PlayStation controls and sketch, old-school style, for awhile.

CARLIN
Brush up on the latest additions to the seven dirty words you can't say on television ... from the professor himself.

The ever-acerbic George Carlin will bring his uniquely humorous brand of laser-guided social criticism to two stand-up comedy shows at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on New Year's Eve.

Always topical and more than willing to share what's gnawing at him, Carlin is sure to have a few choice words to share about the year gone by. Showtimes are 6 and 9 p.m., and performances typically run 75 to 90 minutes, so you'll be out well before midnight.

Tickets are on sale now at $38 and $45. Call (877) 750-4400 or 591-2211.
