Project trains women to work on elevators

Advertiser Staff

The Women in Technology Project, which has helped women on Maui get training as laborers, pipe-fitter/welders and paint-ers, will now be recruiting female apprentices to install, maintain and replace elevators, escalators and moving walkways.

Apprentices will combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction and must complete a six-month probation, earning about $432 per week. After the probation period, they will earn $605 per week, increasing to about $973 per week after completing the apprenticeship program in four to five years.

No experience is required but applicants must be over 18, have a high-school diploma or general equivalency degree, pass a reading and math aptitude test and be able to perform physical requirements of the job.

The Women in Technology Project received a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to help labor unions and employers recruit more women into apprenticeships and nontraditional occupations.

For more information, send a written request for an application to Women in Technology Project, Attn: Mapu Aiu, 590 Lipoa Parkway #103, Kihei, HI 96753.

Include applicant's name, mailing address, telephone number and two self-addressed stamped envelopes. Written requests for applications must be postmarked no later than Nov. 15.
