The City Charter forbids any police officer to "support, advocate or aid in the election or defeat of any candidate for public office." The state's police union successfully challenged the provision in court in 1996, however, rendering the ban unenforceable regarding political activity by officers who are off duty and not in uniform. A story on Page B1 yesterday did not fully explain the situation.
