Second-ranked BYUH rallies past No. 19 HPU

All-American Chun Yi Lin had a team-high 22 kills as the No. 2 Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team outlasted No. 19 Hawai'i Pacific, 29-31, 30-25, 20-30, 30-20, 15-11, in a non-conference match last night in La'ie.

Ashley Moeai had 19 kills, Silvia Oliveira 18 and Yu Chuan Weng 17 for the Seasiders.

Nadica Karleusa had a match-high 24 kills, and Flavia Brakling added 21 and Paula Koikopoulos 11 for the Sea Warriors.

BYUH improved to 19-2, and Hawai'i Pacific fell to 15-6.

VOLLEYBALL

U.S. perfect in World Cup: Logan Tom scored a match-high 16 points and Keba Phipps added 13 as the United States remained unbeaten at the World Cup with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Japan Thursday in Nagoya, Japan.

The U.S., ranked No. 1 in the world, and No. 2 China are the only unbeaten teams in the 12-team, two-week, round-robin tournament. The top three teams earn automatic bids to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Former Hawai'i All-American Heather Bown had eight points.

GOLF

Champions qualifying: Former Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year Dick McClean closed with an even-par 72 yesterday to advance to the final stage of the Champions Tour Qualifying School.

McClean had a four-day total of 4-over 292 to tie for 17th. The top 19 advanced from the PGA Southern California Golf Club in Calimesa. Hajime Meshiai and Mark Johnson were co-medalists at 282.

Finals will be at the Tournament Players Club at Eagle Trace in Coral Springs, Fla. Hilo's Steve Veriato is among the 25 who received an exemption into the final stage, where there will be 110 competitors.

Mullen 11 back in Assistant Pro: Mililani's Jerry Mullen shot a second-round 76 at the TaylorMade-adidas PGA Assistant Professional Championship. At 1-over 145, Mullen is 11 shots behind the leaders.

The 72-hole tournament is being played at PGA Golf Club's Dye Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Amatour Championship: Amatour Hawai'i closes its second season with the Tour Championship this weekend.

Four players still have a chance to win Player of the Year honors. Joe Phengsavath leads the race with 1,330 points, but won't play at Honolulu Country Club. Mark Chun (1,185 points), Blaine Kimura (1,085) and Shannon Tanoue (850) all have a shot at overtaking Phengsavath with double points at stake in the championship.

The Top 24 players in the points race will earn exemptions for 2004.

Kramer Aoki is defending his championship. Norman-Ganin Asao, a two-time winner on tour, is also entered along with junior golfer Travis Toyama.

DIVING

UH's Gowdy wins 1-meter: University of Hawai'i's Mike Gowdy won the 1-meter event at the USC Trojan Diving Invitational yesterday, with a score of 302.40.

Gowdy, a four-time All-American, was fourth in the 3-meter with 473.40 points Thursday, but scored 495.45 in the preliminary round, earning him an NCAA qualifying mark.

Fellow Warrior Junior Coyle finished seventh in the 1-meter (252.95) and 3-meter (462.15).

SWIMMING

Affleck breaks UH record: University of Hawai'i's Andrew Affleck broke a 22-year-old school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a UH dual meet against No. 4 California last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

California won, 184-111.

Affleck swam the 1,000 in nine minutes, 6.9 seconds, breaking David Daniels' time of 9:09.35, set in 1981.

Affleck finished second to California's Daniel Lysaught's 9:05.27.

Hawai'i's Cheyne Bloch won the 100 (54.94) and 200 breaststoke (2:00.49) events.

TENNIS

Futures tourney qualifying: Qualifying for the $15,000 Honolulu Futures tournament runs through Monday at the Diamond Head and Ala Moana Beach Park courts.

The men's event is part of the U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit. The 32-player main draw begins Tuesday. The first three days are at Ala Moana. Friday's quarterfinals, Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's final will be at Diamond Head.

Eight qualifiers advance to the main draw, along with 20 direct entries and four wild cards. Former Hawai'i Pacific All-American Mikael Maatta won one of the wild cards at a tournament last month.

The 16-team doubles draw includes Hawai'i's Dennis Lajola and Malino Oda. Lajola, an Iolani freshman, also received wild card entries into the singles qualifying for this tournament and the Waikoloa Futures, Nov. 17-23 on the Big Island.

Play begins at 9 a.m. this weekend and 10 a.m. starting Monday. There is no admission charge.

Players in circuit events are ranked outside No. 250 in the world. They earn ranking points along with prize money.
