HPU, BYUH runners win regional titles

Hawai'i Pacific's William Ngetich and Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Chelsea Smith won the men's and women's individual cross country titles, respectively, at the NCAA Division II Western Regional Championships yesterday in Chino, Calif.

Ngetich, a junior from Nairobi, Kenya, outpaced a field of 116 runners to win the 10-kilometer race in 31 minutes and 40.5 seconds.

Smith, a sophomore from Mead, Wash., finished the 154-competitor, 6-kilometer race in 20:54.4. HPU's Nina Christensen finished second in 21:50.1.

Ngetich, Smith and Christensen qualified for the NCAA II National Championship on Nov. 22 at Raleigh, N.C.

SURFING

Three from Hawai'i advance: Three Hawai'i surfers were among the first-round winners on the opening day of the Oxbow World Longboard Championships yesterday in 6-foot waves at Manu Bay, Raglan, New Zealand.

Bonga Perkins of Hale'iwa dominated his first-round heat, recording scores of 9.0 and 7.5.

Keegan Edwards of Honolulu and Duane DeSoto from Makaha also won first-round heats.

MEETING

QB Club: Kapolei football coach Darren Hernandez, Punahou football coach Kale Ane and O'ahu Interscholastic Association executive secretary Dwight Toyama will be the featured speakers at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

WATER POLO

BYUH beats Chaminade: Jordan Brink and Vanja Kalabic scored two goals apiece as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Chaminade, 8-5, in a water polo match yesterday in Lai'e.
