THE LEFT LANE
Opera in a box

Advertiser Staff and News Services

It's called the HOT Box. And if you love opera, it rocks.

Hawaii Opera Theatre offers schools a steamer-trunk-type box full of opera goodies as a fun learning experience. "It gives teachers the opportunity for their children to get hands-on and touchy with stuff from opera," said Erik Haines, education manager.

The container is stuffed with items such as costumes, props, books, CDs and production pieces. It's free and available for classroom use for up to one week. Reservations: 596-7372, ext. 18.

The 'Fortune' 4,000

"I'd like to buy a vowel ... "

Contestants have been uttering those words on "Wheel of Fortune" since 1975.

TV's top-rated syndicated series is marking its 4,000th show with a half-hour (6:30 p.m. tonight, Fox) of highlights from decades on the air. This retrospective is part of three weeks of "Wheel" staged from New York's Radio City Music Hall.

More Lilo and Stitch

Disney is tweaking and expanding its "Lilo & Stitch" franchise with a new DVD, "Lilo & Stitch's Island Adventures," out today. It puts the viewer — meaning those L&S kiddie fans — right in the middle of the story.

The DVD includes a conventional hour-long film — the Hawaiian girl and her beloved sidekick engaged in more misadventures. When you're pau watching, you can whip out a game board set against a map of Kaua'i to capture Stitch's lost cousins, play with pogs, and use your remote to engage an on-screen spinner, play a version of "Let's Make a Deal," and more. The Walt Disney Home Entertainment release retails for $29.99.
